Backup Power That Starts On Its Own
Home standby generators installed by licensed electricians and serviced by certified generator technicians.
Your first step is a site evaluation at your home, scheduled around you.
Your Home Does Not Stop Needing Power
Your home does not stop needing power just because the utility does. Refrigerators and freezers, sump pumps, heat, and any medical equipment in the house all depend on it, and so does everything that makes a house livable until your utility power comes back on. A home standby generator keeps them running without anyone going outside to start anything.
The system installs permanently outside and waits. When it senses an outage, it starts on its own, and a transfer switch moves your home off the utility and onto generator power, then moves it back when the utility returns. It runs on the natural gas or propane already serving your home, so there is no fuel to store and nothing to refill.
Corrigan has installed and serviced standby generators since 2004, backed by a family owned electrical company that has served Louisville since 1995. Corrigan Generators brings that work under one name. The same family, the same licensed electricians, and the same phone number you already know.
Whole Home Or Essential Circuits
Every home is different, and so is every homeowner's definition of what needs to stay on. You have two directions to choose from, and we help you decide which one fits your household and your budget. That decision determines the size of your system and the cost of the project, which is why it is the first conversation we have with you.
Whole Home
Your entire home stays powered, including central air conditioning. If cooling is a priority for your family, this is almost always the right choice, because air conditioning is what moves a home into whole-home capacity.
Essential Circuits
Refrigerators, freezers, sump pumps, heat, and the circuits that protect your pipes and your basement. A smaller system, a smaller investment, and enough power to stay comfortably in your home throughout an outage. Sometimes the difference between the two is smaller than homeowners expect. If whole-home coverage is within reach of what you were already prepared to spend, we will tell you before you decide.
What Each One Typically Covers
Every home is different, and this is where the site evaluation earns its keep. As a general orientation:
Essential circuits usually means refrigerators and freezers, sump pumps, heat, well pumps, garage doors, and lighting and outlets in the rooms you actually live in.
Whole home adds central air conditioning, electric water heating, ranges and ovens, and the rest of the house, so an outage barely registers.
Air conditioning is the deciding factor for most homeowners. Cooling draws more than almost anything else in a house, so if summer outages are what worry you, that usually points to whole-home capacity.
When Power Is Not A Convenience
For some households, an outage is not just an inconvenience. It is a medical situation. Oxygen concentrators, ventilators, powered beds, mobility equipment, and refrigerated medication all stop working when the power does.
When a home has medical equipment in it, that changes how we approach the project. Those circuits come first in the sizing conversation, and remote monitoring is standard on those installations, long before we began including it on every system we install. If a generator serving a household with medical needs reports a problem, we want to know immediately rather than waiting to hear about it.
If someone in your home depends on powered equipment, tell us at the site evaluation. We will build the recommendation around it.
Families We've Helped
Brooks uses a ventilator, and it holds only a handful of hours of battery power once it is unplugged. When a storm took his family's power out and their generator tripped offline, they called us and told us about Brooks. We got someone out to them.
"I cannot even describe the peace of mind when a generator kicks on in the middle of a storm."
- Brooks's family, Corrigan customers
"A family member has a medical condition that requires oxygen to survive. Our generator was broken and a dangerous ice storm was coming. Shawn Corrigan and the entire Corrigan team bent over backwards to install a generator before the storm came. We will always be indebted to Corrigan Electric for their kindness, skill, and professionalism."
- Richard Cohen
How We Size Your System
Generators are rated in kilowatts, and the right rating for your home depends on what your home actually runs. We do not size a system by square footage, and we do not estimate.
A project manager from Corrigan Generators comes out and walks your home with you. Inside, we review your electrical panel, your gas service, and the age and capacity of the equipment you already have, including your furnace, water heater, and air conditioning, so that our recommendation reflects your real power demand. Outside, we identify where a generator can be placed safely and legally, including clearance from windows and doors, proper ventilation, the routing between your gas and electric meters, and a location for the pad that keeps the system accessible and your landscaping intact.
We then give you a detailed recommendation of the system that will work for your home, and we explain clearly why we selected it.
We recommend only what your home truly needs. In many cases that means a smaller system than a homeowner expected, because the site evaluation showed a smaller unit will perform. Paying for capacity you will never use adds cost without adding protection.
The Brands We Install
Corrigan Generators is a certified dealer and service provider for three manufacturers, and we are certified to install, service, and perform warranty repairs on all three. Our technicians are trained across the full lineup and recertified every year.
Briggs & Stratton, our primary line
Generac
Kohler
Corrigan is a Power Protect dealer, an Elite level earned by only a select group of dealers, and every Fortress system comes with a full ten year warranty.
All three lines operate on natural gas or propane. During your site evaluation, we walk you through the differences that matter to your decision, including warranty terms, sound levels, and manufacturer lead times.
Not Sure Which Direction Fits Your Home? That Is What The Site Evaluation Is For.
Our Process: What To Expect
Generator installation timelines depend on whether the system you choose is in stock, the manufacturer lead time, and coordination with your utility company's schedule. You receive a completion date when we schedule your installation.
Request Your Appointment - Call our office or submit a request online. A member of our team follows up to schedule your site evaluation.
Site Evaluation and Sizing - A Corrigan Project Manager walks your property with you, reviews your panel, gas service, and existing equipment, and identifies the right location for your system.
Detailed Recommendation - We recommend the system that fits your home and explain clearly why we selected it.
Written Proposal - You receive everything in writing and have a copy for your records. We will hand deliver it whenever that is more convenient for you.
Approval and Order - A deposit is required because of the cost of the equipment. Once your order is placed, we provide the lead time for the brand you selected.
Scheduling - When your generator arrives at our shop, our office contacts you to set your installation dates. You generally receive a completion date up front, not an open-ended window.
Setting Your System - We lay a bed of gravel, set a solid pre-formed concrete pad, and place your generator on it. Solid concrete, not composite.
Gas Connection - Your system is connected to natural gas or propane. We will provide a gas contractor with necessary information and get them in contact with you to coordinate, though you are welcome to use your own. If your gas meter requires an upgrade, our contractor coordinates that with the utility company for you.
Final Installation and Walkthrough - A licensed electrician completes the electrical work, tests your system, and walks you through it. You will know how to shut the system down and restart it, what to expect while running on generator power, and what to avoid. We hand you the key and all of your documentation.
Included With Every Installation
Cold Weather Kit
Oil warmers and battery warmers are installed on every generator we put in. Below freezing, oil thickens and batteries lose cranking power, and a system that cannot start is not backup power. We adopted this standard after a severe cold snap in 2016 and have installed it on every unit since.
Remote Monitoring
Every new installation includes remote monitoring. We see your generator run, and we see it when it does not. In many cases, we know there is a problem before you do.
Your First Year of Service
The first year of generator service and monitoring is included with every installation on select units, so maintenance begins before you have to think about it.
The Work Does Not End At Installation
A standby generator is not a one-time purchase. It sits outdoors through rain, snow, ice, and heat, and it has to start on the one day you need it. Many companies complete the installation and move on. Corrigan built its generator business around everything that happens afterward.
We still service systems we installed more than twenty years ago, and some of those homeowners are now on their second generator with us. Monitoring is a significant part of the reason. When a system reports a fault, we see it, often before you do. And when a warranty issue arises, we handle the claim on your behalf.

What Our Customers Say
Frequently Asked Questions
-
It can. Whether it should depends on what you want running and what fits your budget. If central air conditioning is a priority, you are generally looking at a whole-home system. If your focus is refrigerators, sump pumps, and heat, a smaller system covering essential circuits may be the better use of your investment. We work through that with you during your site evaluation.
-
We do not publish pricing, because the honest answer depends on your home. The size of the system, where it can be placed, how far the gas and electric runs have to travel, and whether your gas meter needs an upgrade all change the number, and quoting a figure before we see your property would not be fair to you. What we can promise is that after the site evaluation you receive a written proposal with the full cost laid out, and nothing is committed until you approve it.
-
Quieter than most people expect. During the weekly self-test, current systems run at roughly the volume of a normal conversation. Under full load during an actual outage they are louder, comparable to a central air conditioning unit. We can compare sound levels across the systems we install during your site evaluation if a quiet unit matters to you.
-
A residential unit is roughly the size of a large air conditioning condenser, and it sits on a concrete pad outside, typically along the side or back of the house. Some models are designed for tight lot lines and can be installed closer to the building than others. We identify the location during the site evaluation and work with your preference wherever code and manufacturer requirements allow.
-
Standby generators run a short self-test on a set schedule, usually weekly, to keep the engine and battery in working condition. Your generator is set to exercise at its normal operating speed, which makes sure it is ready to run when you need it most. We generally set the exercise time to Tuesdays at 2:00 PM, and it can be customized to your preference at the time of installation.
-
Our team evaluates your home, sizes the system properly, and determines the generator that best fits your needs. Scheduling depends on generator stock, manufacturer lead times, our current schedule at the time of your purchase, and whether your local utility needs to complete a gas meter upgrade. You receive a completion date when we schedule your installation.
-
A transfer switch is the device that disconnects your home from the utility and connects it to the generator instead. Every standby system requires one, both for code and for safety, and it is what makes the system automatic. It moves your home onto generator power when the utility drops and moves it back when power returns. Installing it is part of your project.
-
Yes. Permitting and inspection requests are included as part of your installation.
-
Yes. We set a bed of gravel and a solid pre-formed concrete pad as part of your project pricing. Using a pre-formed pad also means no waiting for concrete to cure before your installation continues.
-
Placement is guided by code and by manufacturer requirements. Standby generators produce exhaust, so clearance and ventilation around windows, doors, and enclosed spaces have to be maintained. We accommodate your preference wherever those requirements allow, and we tell you honestly when a location will not work.
-
Yes. We service and repair most major brands regardless of who installed them, and remote monitoring can be added to many existing systems.
-
Yes, we do offer financing. Your written proposal lays out the full cost of the project up front, so you know exactly what you are looking at before you decide.
